The reduction of desires is the route to happiness. Desire is the root cause of all suffering. It is only in the ephemeral moments of desirelessness that ensue after the fulfilment of a desire, that we truly experience contentment, serenity and bliss. When we pray to God, we should ask to be blessed with the spiritual bliss of desirelessness. This spiritual bliss is the highest thing to be desired from God. One can also train one's mind to attain this blissful state of desirelessness through sadhana, by converting desires into preferences. Preferences are harmless and non binding and do not lead to suffering. It is the non fulfilment of binding desires that is a constant source of suffering. The compulsivity to pursue desires can progressively be attenuated or controlled by concertedly exercising one’s will power to overcome the raga-dvesha or attachments-aversions that induce or drive those desires. True bliss and everlasting peace lie in attaining an abiding state of desirelessness. No sense object can give perfect everlasting joy, enduring pleasure or uninterrupted contentment. They can only offer temporary enjoyment and temporary satiation. When we become established in this spiritual wisdom and discernment, we can overcome the impulses of raga-dvesha and our actions can be driven by dharma or the code of righteousness and duty, rather than by the compulsive pursuit of objects of desire. Actions which are motivated by dharma are liberating and non binding. They do not bind one to karmic reactions as opposed to the karmic bondage generated by actions that are driven by desires, vasanas, attachment to outcomes, agency or doership.
